The Search for Animal Chin Documentary
“Welcome to our Sneak Preview: You are the first group of skaters to view this key feature of our Special Edition version of The Search for Animal Chin DVD. Since it is a film about a film, it is not a traditional skateboard video, and thus treads new video ground in our industry, just like The Search for Animal Chin did in its day.
Our Goals are:
First of all, To expose the fiery human dynamics that went into making the first fictitious skateboard movie produced, directed and acted by professional skateboarders.
2nd, To place the film into its historical context making it more accessible to today’s skaters, while simultaneously allowing those who were “there” to re-live a very special moment in time, that has turned out to be an important part of the history of skateboarding.
3rd, To honor those who were brave enough to attempt and to succeed in creating a video that has withstood the test of time, to become a member of everyone’s ten best skate videos of all time, if not the best of all.
Finally, to create a video bridge that allows us to revisit, for a brief moment, the energy, excitement and innocence that embodied the amazing skateboard industry of the 80s.
This film was produced, directed, filmed and edited by Don Hoffman in collaboration with Stacy Peralta. I wish to pay great tribute to the incredible effort Don has put into this film, making it a labor of love. Don not only performed the usual documentary duties one might expect, but he is also responsible for initiating the digital animation and 3-D pans you will see during the film.
Making a film about a film that is as widely known as Animal Chin is certainly a risky challenge, but I think Don and Stacy have succeeded in not only setting the record straight historically, they have done it in a manner that is both highly educational and entertaining. And so it is our pleasure to present you with a Sneak Preview of The Making of Animal Chin… I hope you enjoy it.
